  • Proposition 10
    Prop 10 funds programs that promote and improve early childhood development from the prenatal stage to five years of age.

  • Health Insurance and Utilization - A medical home refers to children having access to and using coordinated health, dental, vision and mental health services. Increasing enrollment in eligible insurance programs and maintaining access and utilization provide children with preventive medical care. Program allocation for FY10-15: $6.9 million.

  • Improve Nutrition - Improving nutrition and physical activity for young children can help provide a healthy start in life, encourage healthy habits, and help decrease a variety of problems and conditions. Programs focus on promoting breastfeeding in infants, nutrition education activities, and the building of tot lots. Program allocation for FY10-15: $5.8 million.

  • Decrease Dental Disease - Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases in young children and if left untreated can lead to pain, infection and tooth loss. Water fluoridation and early access to dental clinics are safe, cost-effective and proven ways of preventing tooth decay. Program allocation for FY10-15: $16.5 million.

  • Effective Parenting - Young children require love, instruction, and support from their parents and caregivers in order to build a foundation for their developmental growth. Parent support and education services are provided through family resource centers, day and night respite care and home visitation programs. Program allocation for FY10-15: $41 million.

  • Increasing Participation in Quality Early Care and Education - Parents and caregivers need access to good information in order to make informed choices about the quality of the childcare. By increasing workforce development in the early care and education field children can enhance their development and readiness for kindergarten. Program allocation for FY10-15: $9.3 million.
  • School Readiness - In the years from birth through age five, children develop basic knowledge, understanding and interests they need to become successful learners. This program provides toddler, preschool and kindergarten transition services to children and families throughout the county. Program allocation for FY10-15: $21.8 million.

  • Community Building Initiative - The more we know each other in our communities and the more connected we are to each other the more likely we are to get help and support when we need it. This concept of social capital is achieved through grants that provide seed money for everyday people to create lasting connections. Program allocation for FY10-15: $300,000.
