About the CBI and How You Can Get Involved

Inquire about the availability of documents in alternate formats.

CBI is our unique opportunity for you to improve the lives of children ages zero to five while building a more connected community. There are many simple ways to do this. It starts with you. Check out the resources and the information we have below to help inspire you.

What Can You Do?

Building community relationships is as easy as joining a book club, organizing a neighborhood clean-up or celebration, starting a babysitting cooperative, or initiating neighborhood potlucks. Activities like these are not the ends, but the means, or the vehicle to get families together. They encourage people to interact and get to know each other. Coming together helps decrease isolation and increase trust. Connections in a community give families a chance to learn from each other, support each other, share, and speak up about what's important to them.

Apply For A Community Grant:

First 5 Sacramento offers Community Grants to groups of three or more who have an idea for activities that can help develop networks for families and benefit children zero to five. The grants provide funding up to $5,000 to small groups of parents or caregivers who live in Sacramento County and have ideas that bring people together within their community. All activities must take place in Sacramento County. The 2009 Community Grant application is under development and will be released and posted on our website by late December 2008.

Successes:

By coming together through a variety of activities around children zero to five, our CBI grantees have reported a whole host of successes including:

  • Feeling safer in their community and noticing decreased crime
  • Knowing their neighbors and allowing their children to play outside with other children
  • Seeing children improve their development and social skills as a result of the activities and meeting other families
  • Helping each other with child care, carpooling, and other important tasks
  • Learning about important community resources and parenting tips from each other

Training Events:

Training events and gatherings are planned to support the community’s efforts to connect, learn about community building, network and share resources. Please join us for these informative, interactive and fun gatherings.

Trainings are coordinated by The Center for Collaborative Planning (CCP) with assistance from High Points Consulting. Refreshments are generally provided.
