First 5 Sacramento has taken a comprehensive approach to combating dental disease among young children and increasing awareness about the importance of good oral hygiene beginning at birth:

  • Several state of art children's dental centers allow timely access to children's on Denti-Cal.  Find a children's dental center in your community.
  • County wide water fluoridation is a safe, cost effective, and proven way of preventing tooth decay. Check the map to see if your home has fluoridated water  
  • Mobile dental screenings go directly to preschools and provide teeth screenings and fluoride applications. 
  • Advocacy efforts to increase access to dental services is led by the Medi-Cal Dental Advisory Committee,

Baby teeth matter! Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases in infants and young children and it is preventable. It’s not only a health problem - it is a learning problem. When children are in pain they cannot learn.

What Parents Are Saying About Fear, Misconceptions and Other Barriers to Children’s Use of Dental Services. This study reveals the challenges Sacramento parents face that prevent them from taking their children to the dentist and includes recommendations for positive change.
